10/25 Class - Physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia

In this class we learned about Judaism's views of assisted suicide and euthanasia. We learned about the difficult choices families have to make some times and talked about ways people can make a difference in their own families through the use of living wills and durable power of attorney. We talked about Judaism's concern with the quality of life. Students shared their own experiences with having to decide to euthanize family pets.

We talked about the movie Million Dollar Baby.

What do you think? How do you feel about physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia?

I have a terminally ill husband. A couple of years before he became sick with this disease, he had gone to his lawyer and made out a "living will" requesting no heroic measures if he became terminally ill. He also gave me a medical power of attorney. Therefore, when he bacame so ill that had to be placed in a Residental Care Facility, I invoked these legal papers. He has been in the Facility (a really comfortable and caring Board and Care Home) for nearly three years. He is now totally helpless. He can do nothing for yourself. Imagine if you will, you wake up in the morning and cannot turn over in bed, get up, brush your teeth, shower, and so forth. We have our medical insurance supplying Hospice and Palliative care. What that means is that the medical insurance sends a doctor, nurse, and any other medical necessity right to him. He is kept comfortable at all times, and we make sure that he is never in pain. Therefore, no euthanasia is ever needed. We leave that up to the Almighty.
